What Has Women’s Fashion Evolved Into?

The concept of women’s fashion was first uttered in the Middle Ages, but it became alive much later and reached its peak in the 20th century.

The gradual change from the old time consuming traditions of hand craftsmanship of medieval times to the haute couture Parisian fashion houses was amazing. Moreover, it should be added that the progressive of women’s fashion can be credited to outside factors, such as economical, political and social events, which radically influenced the course of fashion. Contemporary conditions-social, religious, and political, still play important roles in women’s fashion nowadays.

Some say that throughout the years, fashion has changed in almost every aspect except his name. It is no doubt that it can be easily noticed the fact there has been a progression in terms of women’s fashion. Most historians agree to this theory by explaining that this is mainly due to outside forces such as political conditions and beliefs among the societies which women took part in.

Everything began in the 1920s, when women’s attire had less defined waistlines and hemlines were raised to conserve material for the war effort. All of a sudden the woman’s body was exposed which lead to shorter skirts of flappers who became an icon of the Roaring Twenties. By the 1930s, people were sick and tired of the bloody war and longed for parties and ceremonial events where clean and tidy clothing, with a dash of glamor and elegance, could be seen.

Later on, in the 1960s, woman’s fashion was a mirror of woman’s liberation. Hemlines were raised once again and swimsuits revealed even more skin that in the previous decades. Women had the freedom to dress as they would consider, something which they’ve never been able to do before. Nowadays, fashion houses, fashion designers, along with high-status consumers, like celebrities, are determining factors of change in fashion trends in various Western countries.
